Abstract

Wireless communication consumes significant amount of energy. In an ad-hoc network where each device runs on its own battery, the energy consumption should be minimized to extend the network lifetime and hence the energy consumption is one of the most important factors in designing a wireless ad-hoc network. In this paper, we survey literature for the energy efficient multicasting problem in wireless ad-hoc networks. Due to the NP-hardness of the problem, many heuristics have been studied. However, the heuristics in the literature suffer from coarse performance ratio. Relatively small amount of research has been done in optimization approach. It is important to have knowledge of the optimal solution structure in order to develop more efficient heuristics and algorithms. We also summarize the optimization approach for the problem and compare the computational results. In addition, we also review literature for slightly different approaches to extend the network lifetime, since minimizing the total energy does not always lead to a longer network lifetime.
